High oleic sunflower oil
High oleic sunflower oil comes from sunflower varieties rich in oleic acid, a monounsaturated fat. Codex requires at least 75% oleic acid in its fatty acids. It is used in foods and frying, with greater oxidation resistance than conventional sunflower oil.
Why PRūF tracks it
Human evidence supports replacing saturated fat, while newer animal adiposity signals remain uncertain for people; refining contaminants and prolonged reheating warrant control, and the oil name alone cannot reveal those exposures.

High oleic sunflower oil differs from conventional sunflower oil and from high-oleic safflower oil. The name describes fatty-acid composition, which does not establish refining grade, absence of residual seed proteins, or heating history. Small human studies show lower LDL cholesterol when diets rich in saturated fat are replaced with this oil. That does not establish superiority to other unsaturated oils: a four-week trial favored olive-pomace oil for LDL, while blood-pressure and inflammation measures did not differ.
These trials measured short-term markers, not heart attacks or longevity. New animal research deserves attention: one rat study found more body fat, and a mouse study found increased fat-cell precursor activity, although its later mature-fat-cell outcome was not significantly increased with this particular oil. Those results do not establish that ordinary dietary use causes human obesity. Prolonged frying still produces oxidation compounds, and high-temperature refining can form contaminants subject to food limits.
FDA permits only a qualified, substitution-based heart-health claim for qualifying oils. Louisiana requires a food-service seed-oil notice from 2028, without banning this oil.
