Guar gum
Guar gum is a plant fiber made from the inner part of guar seeds. It thickens and stabilizes foods such as sauces, dairy products and baked goods. Partially hydrolyzed guar has shorter chains and lower viscosity, so studies of different preparations need careful comparison.
Why PRūF tracks it
Guar gum can cause digestive discomfort and rarely severe allergy, while newer observational and animal findings leave uncertainty about longer-term effects; infant-use evidence gaps and choking risks from dry oral products require separate context.

Guar gum is fermented by gut bacteria and can cause gas, bloating or discomfort, especially at supplemental doses. In a small study using 8 grams daily, gas improved with continued use, but some sensations persisted. Rare severe allergic reactions have also been reported. EFSA’s general-population review found no need for a numerical daily limit at assessed food uses.
More recent evidence adds uncertainty: a French cohort linked estimated guar intake with diabetes, while a prostate-cancer association was sensitive to the analysis used. These observations cannot establish causation, and an acute feeding trial found lower post-meal glucose with guar. Studies of partially hydrolyzed guar in mice reported worse chemically induced colitis and, with an added carcinogen, colon tumors; these experiments do not show that ordinary food use causes human cancer. A short postoperative trial found similar diarrhea rates with a hydrolyzed-guar formula and a fiber-free formula.
Separately, insufficient infant-specific safety data led the EU to withdraw defined formula and medical-food uses in August 2026, with another withdrawal due in April 2027 and transitions for existing products. The regulation identifies no immediate health concern. These narrow restrictions do not amount to a general food ban. These uncertainties remain under review.
