Dextrose
Dextrose is D-glucose, a simple sugar often made by breaking down starch, then refining and crystallizing it. It is used to sweeten foods, support fermentation and help with browning and texture. It comes in forms with or without water bound into its crystals.
Also known as
D-glucose · glucose · corn sugar · grape sugar · anhydrous dextrose · dextrose anhydrous · dextrose monohydrate · glucose monohydrate
Why PRūF tracks it
Dextrose’s main concerns are dose-related blood-glucose effects, tooth decay and contribution to excess added-sugar intake; evidence about fructose, sweetened drinks or whole dietary patterns cannot establish every effect of dextrose itself.

Dextrose contributes to added sugar when used in food processing. Its health effects depend on the amount eaten, how often, the food or drink carrying it, and a person’s glucose regulation. Frequent sugar exposure contributes to tooth decay, and high added-sugar intake can make excess calorie intake and weight gain more likely. These are nutritional concerns; the presence of dextrose does not show that a meal contains a harmful dose.
Glucose can raise blood sugar promptly, which matters for people managing diabetes. However, glucose and fructose do not have identical effects. In one seven-week trial in healthy young men, glucose drinks did not increase liver fatty-acid synthesis as fructose and sucrose drinks did. That limited finding does not establish long-term safety at high intakes.
WHO advises reducing free sugars, while current US guidance recommends limiting total added sugars per meal and avoiding them in younger children. Dextrose remains permitted under US food rules. A citizen petition seeking changes to industrial refined-carbohydrate use remains without a final decision posted in its FDA docket.
